Realized I haven't done a concert update. And I went to some concerts.

Background on the Sellersville Theater: it's in Sellersville, which is a random town sort of near Quakertown. It was built in 1894, and by the time I started going there, it was a run-down movie theater. John Shelly worked there in high school. Then I guess somebody bought it and decided to fix it up a bit, and they made a deal with the Washington House restaurant next door. Now the theater has live music, which is terrific, and I think the Washington House gives a discount if you eat there before or after a show. And the theater is doing really well, if their coming events flyer is any indication. They've got bands in there practically every night, and some really good stuff, too. It makes me happy to see it succeeding.

Sunday 4/13/07: Went with my parents to see Vienna Teng. They had seen her once before, opening for Dar Williams, but I had only heard the album my parents own that I ripped to mp3.

David Berkeley opened. He was a guy with a guitar, but he had a really nice voice. My parents and I liked him a lot. I bought his cd and he signed it. That guy can unwrap and open a cd faster than anyone I've ever seen, including Jorn.

Vienna was amazing. When my parents saw her, it was just her and a piano; this time, it was her and a piano plus a cellist and a drummer and a violinist and their respective instruments. We loved the whole show. I was just so impressed. And she played my mom's and my favorite song off the album we know, so we were happy. An excellent show.

Here's the song my mom and I like.

Thursday 4/26/07: I went to see Erin McKeown by myself. My dad is a volunteer usher at the Sellersville Theater, though, so he was there ushering, and his best friend and my second dad, Rick, was there too, usher-shadowing to see if he wants to be an usher there too. They practically battled in the aisle to see who was going to show me to my seat. My dad got me a great seat, too--fourth row, right in the middle. Erin was directly in front of me, which was super cool. I think in the future, though, I'm going to opt for an aisle seat, so that if I get tired (if! ha!) I can sneak out more surreptiously.

Antje Duvekot (pronounced AN-tyuh DOO-va-kot, which is even how the phonetic spelling is spelled on her postcards) opened. I'm not ashamed to say that women like her are the whole reason I identify as bisexual. Goddamn. She's beautiful and talented and funny and she sings pretty. I really enjoyed her set. I bought her cd after the show but was too nervous to say anything to her. Instead I smiled like a nervous serial killer and she went up to the balcony with her friend. Sigh.

I liked Erin McKeown too. I don't know, I think her aesthetic is a little too rocky/jazzy for me. I like a lot of her songs, but I wasn't totally psyched about the show. I don't know why. Maybe I was tired out already? But she played Paper Moon (which was on the mix cd Fritz sent me) and the song about the blackbirds, which I think is the song of hers that everyone knows. They were both good songs.

The other notable thing about this show was that I spotted Tori Hull in the audience! Tori, of Tori & Cori, from Susquehanna. So psyched! I knew we lived pretty close, and we had sent each other myspace messages passionately declaring how "we should get together sometime!" but then I guess I promptly forgot? But damn that girl is sweet. And so beautiful, I've always thought she just has a damn beautiful face. We had a nice chat. And we really are going to get together sometime! Cori is apparently living in Maryland right now, so maybe we'll meet for dinner sometime when she's up visiting.

The conclusion of the Erin McKeown concert was that I snuck out right before the second encore, while wishing I'd snuck out before the encores. I hugged my dads goodbye on the way out. I was really tired. But I didn't fall asleep during the show (Jorn), which I was proud of. Nor did I fall asleep in the car on the way home.

It was awesome! And I totally should have thought to ask you to go see Erin McKeown with me, so we're even for Neil Gaiman now. :)

We saw Vienna last night. She's so awesome, I just love her! I love the percussionist, too. When we saw her last it was just her, the cellist & violinist. The trio was great but adding the percussion brought a lot to the sound.
