supercheesegirl: (books - star paper)
Journal info: American Literary Review, published out of the English Department at the University of North Texas, website: http://www.engl.unt.edu/alr/. Submissions accepted September to May, but they've got a contest going for the summer that I think I may submit to. Details on the website.

Really good stuff in here. The prose in particular was excellent. The nonfiction by Vicki Lindner was really very good--heartbreaking and powerful--and the stories by Steven Schwartz (about the widower falling in love) and Stefanie Freele were excellent. Although Freele's story was a bit too perfect, if you know what I mean, particularly for a story about someone in a mental hospital. I guess I tend to expect those sorts of stories to have some fray around the edges, because the narrator is frayed around the edges, but the perfection of the story works with this narrator too.

For poems, I liked Michael Robins ("What You Own You Do Not Own"), Meg Shevenock ("Blue Room", very nice); K.A. Holt's "Early for Sunday School" annoyed me at first but I really liked the ending; and I loved both of Christopher Lowell's poems. Should look into him.

Overall, really good stuff. I will probably send nonfiction to the contest this summer and poems in the fall.
