supercheesegirl: (watch out!)
I hadn't received the Susquehanna Today alumni newsletter for a while--I think I forgot to give them my new address after I moved to PA. Well, they tracked me down, and I got it in yesterday's mail. And this time it was actually not so bad! Apparently no one from my graduating class is doing anything, and nobody I know from the preceding or later years is doing anything either. (Although apparently Jody Guillemette married Carl Steidel? Last I heard they broke up, but there was a reference for "Jody Guillemette '04 Steidel" under '04, which said "see '03", but there wasn't any mention of Carl in the '03 news. WTF? The '03 news did mention, however, that Jay Varner is rocking out and getting awards for his nonfiction, which is awesome.)

Anyway, reading the alumni newsletter is usually an exercise in getting upset about how awesome everybody else's lives are compared with mine, especially the people I particularly hated for their perfect lives back when we were undergrads together, and especially when I myself had little to no chance of ever having a wedding at all, let alone a Julie-Snyder-perfect wedding. But this time, no pain. And a whole big spread about athletics, which completely didn't interest me.

Also? Now that there's a significantly larger chance for wedding bells in my future, I'm totally plotting the photo and joyful news item I'll send to the newsletter. Definitely a part of the wedding fantasy, which is ridiculous, but still: Take that, all you annoying alumni with your snotty perfect lives! I too can reach a milestone! Although I probably won't write that in the joyful news item.

"Now that there's a significantly larger chance for wedding bells in my future"

*blink* Well then.
You know, whether or not you had a man in your life, I'm pretty sure you're a lot smarter, wittier, cuter, sexier and just plain more interesting than whoever you were comparing your life with...making you a much better catch, and way better marriage material, even if there wasn't immediate potential.

But yeah, I still get a bit of a kick out of spiteful tab-keeping, myself. ;)

Regarding future possibilities: Well, I mean, before I was with someone who had completely different life goals than I did, so that I could never really plan for or imagine the future while I was with him, and that was an issue for the whole six years we were together. Now I'm with someone who wants all the same stuff I want. So, yes, significantly larger chance. Nothing more to report yet. :)

Ah, spiteful tab-keeping. There are just certain people out there, especially people from college, who I can't help holding myself up to, and they're always ahead of where I want to be. It's so rare to have something that "catches me up". Even though I don't think in those less-than-constructive terms. Nope. Not at all.

It's all babies and weddings. I'd rather hear about where people are, what they do for a living and for fun. I only skim it now (...and look at the pictures.) Hell, we'll submit a wedding pic and I'm sure people will start hiding for the inevitable flying pigs and freezing over of hell.

Exactly--there's so many people that I'd like to hear about, but because they're not getting married or popping out kids or getting new jobs, there's no news.

Yet another reason we all have to look fabulous on your wedding day! :) Freakin' Susquehanna Today.

bwahahaha! It would be funny if you did write that. :)

Lately I've been comparing myself to others and/or feeling like people aren't going to like me. I got so freaked over Girls Weekend and I convinced myself that none of the girls I didn't know would like me. I can be comfortable meeting new people at D*C or whatever, because we're all a bunch of geeks with a side of weird. But noooooooo!!!!, I can't spend the weekend with the normies! They'll judge me or they'll hate me. My lameness will be obvious for all the world to see. Seriously it was so bad that I almost didn't go even though I'd already paid for the house.

I also think, you know that those people who get married younger, well I think they have less of a chance of having a happy marriage than those who marry later. At least it seems everyone I know, myself included, who got married in their early to mid 20's ends up divorced. I know that's not really helpful to you, but take it from an old divorced chick that it's far better to marry for the long haul in your late 20's into your 30's than to be divorced before your 30. Talk about a crappy milestone!

That's an excellent point, about the marriages ending sooner! That's definitely happened to a lot of people I know who weren't married--Jorn was my college sweetie, but it just didn't work out when we got older.

I wish the alumni newsletter had news items about people's divorces! "Sarah Jones '99 Miller has recently separated from her husband, Steve Miller '98 (see 1998) and is moving back in with her parents in New Jersey." And then under 1998 there'd be a picture of Steve Miller with his much younger trophy girlfriend. HA!

A certain someone I'm romantically involved with went to Susquehanna High School. That around where you're from?

Mm, probably not. The Susquehanna is a pretty long river. My college was in a town called Selinsgrove, with a high school of the same name.

Freaking Julie Snyder. She always was too perfect for her own good. Nobody should be that pretty AND have that nice a voice AND be thin AND marry Steve Bishop. Hiss.

Did you see her wedding picture? She was wearing a little scarf. And that will always be the thing I remember about Julie Snyder. Thank you, Susquehanna Today.

Personally, though? I think she's going to chunk up big time after she starts popping out kids.

Yes she has all those things AND lots of people that dislike her for all of the above...

She was never all that genuinely nice to me so whatever.... But yeah Carl and Jodi have a kid!! This whole adult thing has to stop. At least until I can get a boyfriend.

Did you get my reply comment about the stabbing icon? Just checking. Because a stabbing icon would RULE.

No, I didn't! But I will make you one when I have a mo. Stick figure stabbing self in chest, correct?

Date: 2007-10-09 04:02 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] supercheesegirl.livejournal.com
Yes, please! It would be great if she had a sad and/or angry face. She could also be bleeding!

oh god, the freakin SU today. you were not alone in the comparisons and abject misery that document created in you.

i look forward to recycling my susquehanna today before i leave the post office! this has been my new habit; this way i don't carry all that baggage around with me.

was julie snyder the one with the really thick bangs that went right across her forehead? i don't think i interacted with her much. i'm sure she was perfectly nice but i am not a big fan of little scarves.

Date: 2007-09-22 12:23 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] supercheesegirl.livejournal.com
I definitely still read the thing, though. I feel like I still want to know what people are doing. Maybe I just need to get over being nosy.

Yup, brown hair, fair skin, bangs, little scarves. A really, really nice girl, but a bit of a priss maybe. She would have been a freshman when you were a senior, so it makes sense that you wouldn'tve interacted with her much.

yeah, i read it, but don't carry it around with me. i'm also at the point where i don't recognize all the names anymore! i'm old:)

i think she was Stina's little in SAI--that might be how i remember her!
