(Book #100!)
Oh, I love Kay's books. So wonderful. This is a fantasy-fictionalized version of King Alfred the Great fighting the Vikings (set in the same universe as Kay's previous novels on Byzantium/Sarantium and Moorish Spain/al Rassan). Really, really good.
One thing I love about Kay's work is that he takes these huge world-shaping events, these battles and kingships, and distills them down to the key participants, makes them into characters you care about, with problems and hopes and dreams. And, more, he also weaves in the common people, the everyday farmers and artisans whose lives are briefly affected by the huge events. His books are like intricate tapestries.
And I have another one I just got from the library!
