what up, y'all.
last night, jorn and i went to see Cex and the Postal Service at Go! Studios in carrboro. it was awesome. here's how the night went:
i showed up at jorn's house to pick him up around 7. the big black possible-drug-dealer that lives in the house catty-corner to jorn's and always stands around on his balcony so he can yell about how hot i am whenever i walk by started yelling, just like usual. there's multiple drug dealerish dudes that live there (or at least are always out on that balcony), but this one particularly seems to like (yelling at) me, because he'll yell no matter what i'm wearing--i could see yelling, as assholish as it is, when i'm wearing a hot little skirt or tight pants or something, but yesterday i was wearing jeans, a t-shirt, and a hooded sweatshirt. whateva. anyway, i heard the following exchange:
dude 1: WOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOO WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! HOW YOU DOIN'!!!!!!
dude 2: (mumble mumble)
dude 1: no, man, i'm talking to HER!
dude 2: oh, OH! WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
and then i went inside. but it made me laugh--the second dude had to have been high or something, it totally sounded like he thought the first dude was talking to him when he said how you doin'.
and when i went back outside again, jorn was with me, and they never yell stuff when he's with me. i might start telling him to wait outside for me when i'm on my way over. :)
so anyway, we drove to carrboro and found Go! without any problems, even though we'd only really been there once before. and we waited in line outside for a long time, but that was okay since it was a really nice night. when we finally went inside, we got to go in the door marked USE OTHER DOOR, which they were using to let people in for some reason. so we got to see this back hallway and some numbered doors that must've been dressing rooms, and when we came out into the club area we saw that the door we had emerged from was marked "no admittance". so we got to see the secret back area. :) and jorn's ticket reservation by phone went through just fine because they had his name on their list when we got there, and we were a little worried about that because when jorn called to reserve the tickets no one knew if the show was sold out or not. but they had them, and they let us in. woot.
the club itself is really awesome. it's probably my favorite little club so far--cooler than cat's cradle definitely. it's really little, and downstairs is the stage and an open area and then a small bar, and the bathrooms are on either side of the stage (which must be hilarious when you're trying to pee--i bet the toilets vibrate with the music--but i did not pee there last night). there's also a little balcony above the bar with a merch station and some couches and a couple arcade games (Frogger and Tron). and you could stand at the railing and have a perfect view of the stage, so that's what we did. we stood for all of the first band, Shallow Be Thy Name; i thought they were pretty okay, but jorn really didn't like them. next was Cex, and i thought he was awesome. he walks on the stage in a black t-shirt and these clunky glasses, and i thought, he's kinda cute. then he changes his shirt to this clingy guy-tank-top and takes off the glasses and starts rapping, and i'm like, ohmygod he's HOT. he's all skinny and stuff too, but i like that anyway, and he's got so much personality. i liked the songs he did at the beginning of his set better than the ones at the end, when he got all rage against the machine and was yelling and stuff. he was better (and cexier) when he was being all funny, and, well, sexy, than when he was being all angry and angst-ridden. but overall i really enjoyed his performance. jorn was kinda disappointed, though, because he had really REALLY liked this guy when he saw him at a concert a few months back, before he got all angst-ridden.
anyway, after Cex was The Postal Service. they were an electronic-y guy, the singer from deathcab for cutie, and a chick. and they were so incredibly awesome. the electronic-y guy was also projecting video stuff onto a screen behind them, which was cool, and their music was so great. the singer guy played guitar and some keyboardy stuff i think and drums on occasion, and the chick played guitar and keyboards and harmonica and sang. at one point they did an awesome duet that was really cute and really good. and they played the "don't wake me, i plan on sleeping in" song, which i knew ahead of time. we even stayed for the encore, which was really cool but which i'm not going to tell you about in case you go see them. but i really liked them, and i think jorn really liked them too. this was one of the first concerts i've been to where i didn't know any of the bands ahead of time but totally ended up liking them. (usually i don't go to a concert unless i already know and absolutely adore the band playing. the other time i can think of when i didn't know the band was when we saw rainer maria with built to spill, and i loved rainer maria but by the time built to spill got onstage i was totally wiped out and didn't really enjoy their music, and i felt bad about that).
good night. good concert. thesis is done--i need to run to kinko's this afternoon and get four copies made (one for me plus one for each of my committee members, and the original to the grad school office for formatting). but i have the table of contents done (what a pain in the ass THAT was) and the abstract and the acknowledgements, and i think i got the spacing and all correct for the title page and the approval page. hopefully it's done and DONE and then i can be done with it (and sing The Done Song, by Done Done and the Done Dones). :)
