Eh. There was nothing about this book that I absolutely loved, nor was there anything I particularly disliked. I'm kind of surprised, because Sedaris seems like the sort of personality I really enjoy. There were times I laughed out loud, but mostly it was just pretty okay. Like David Cook's performances last week: solid enough to get you through.

Yes, he's much funnier when he's reading aloud.

Have you heard his "live at carnegie hall"? It's much better than reading the books.

I was actually a bit disappointed with Sedaris when I read him. You're 'solid' remark strikes me as perfect. And with all the hype I'd been subjected to before I read him, solid left me a bit lacking. That said, I'd have to agree that he's much funnier if you can hear him. I hadn't really thought about this till the comments above, but it's absolutely true. At least for me.

For full funniness impact, I recommend listening to him read rather than reading him. Bonus: once you've heard him do a few readings or listened to him read one of his books on tape, you'll be able to hear his dryly funny voice when you're reading him in print. In fact, I have started reading a piece in the New Yorker and, several paragraphs in, said "I think this is David Sedaris," and been right, more than once.
