It was nice to finally get some resolution to the series, but I had a few gripes.
So basically, the whole big resurrection thing is... pretty much exactly what the main characters hypothesized it was like two books ago? Oh.
I knew there was a reason Alice was in these books at all. Turns out it was not the best reason ever, but oh well.
I hated how the last page ended on this wide open note. Is there someone in the hall? Fuck that.
I thought the Sam Clemens/Erik Bloodaxe thing wasn't explored nearly enough. Sam just has a heart attack and that's it? And then we never see Erik again, never hear his story? WTF? Sorry, that's annoying. After all that that reunion was built up to be, it was really an anticlimax.
Although, shit did I hate Sam Clemens. The most annoying character ever. Sam Clemens and Richard Burton just felt kind of self indulgent on Farmer's part. I skipped Burton's long monologue. WTF was the point of that?
The paddleboat battle was the longest, most drawn out, most boring thing ever. Jesus.
::edit:: ALSO, I was thinking about this when I woke up, and I realized that the whole basis of the final resolution is stupid. The people who are going to go to the trouble of ensouling the entire population of a planet over hundreds of thousands of years and then recreating all the trillions of souls to give them a chance at redeeming themselves and Going On--why would those people go to all that damn trouble and then give those trillions of people only 120 years to figure it out? It doesn't make sense. You'd think they'd want to save all the souls they could, so they'd give them plenty of time.
And he didn't address the question of where all the post-1983 people are. Or if there are still people living normal lives on Earth. Argh, I'm annoyed now. A book should not wake me up before the alarm with its inconsistencies.
OK, maybe I didn't like this book very much. I am slightly interested to see where Farmer took the series after this book, but I don't know if I care enough to seek it out. If I should, let me know.
