OK, so I just made a hair appointment at a likely salon in the Philly area, Gravity Hair. I am trying very hard to get over my attachment to Linda at Judy Jetson in Cambridge and move on with my life. I haven't had a haircut since December. It's time.
So I made the appointment, and I was able to get in for this Saturday, and I know from the website that a woman's haircut costs $42-55. And then the girl on the phone asks if I want a blow dry. I ask if that costs extra, and she says yes, and I say how MUCH extra, and she says 10. And I said no, no blow dry thank you. But, okay, is it typical for a salon to charge extra for blow drying? Judy Jetson didn't and they were pretty upscale. I mean, if I'm paying up to $55 for a haircut, and they're not going to blow dry it for me, I think that's a little cheap. How am I supposed to know how the cut turned out if I can't see it styled the way the stylist does it? I always screw up haircuts when I style them myself. It's one thing not to get a blow dry in the summer, but what happens in the winter? I just go home with a wet head? This is so troublesome to me!
I'm seriously considering calling back and canceling the appointment. This just puts a bad taste in my mouth. Gah! I really wanted to get this taken care of so I could have nice hair when I see F and F's mom next week. And after my experience last fall with getting hair done, I kind of feel like I'm never ever going to find a local salon that works for me. This is so fucking stressful. I will probably keep the appointment for this week and then just never go back there again, but argh.

Date: 2008-08-07 12:11 am (UTC)From:But $45-55 for a decent stylist to cut my hair seems about right. I got the super cheap cuts for years, until I finally gave in and conceded that for $13, I was getting $13 worth of quality in the haircut, and I hated it. I've hated upscale places, too, and it took some searching around to find one I could live with...is there a forum you can check reviews? Like Yelp?

Date: 2008-08-06 10:43 pm (UTC)From:I second the suggestion to ask people at work/friends where they get it cut and who their stylist is.
You could bring a photo of yourself sporting a haircut you like. Even if it's a 4-yr-old photo or the cut's a little grown out in the pic. Talk to them for at least 5 mins in advance of any scissors being pulled out about what you want, how much time & product you're willing to put into it, etc.
If their prices make you unhappy, don't go there. You may be predisposed to dislike the experience anyway and then be extra unhappy with the cut. Unless you feel any cut is better than your current 'do.
