books 2008: Muscular Music, by Terrance Hayes

Another poetry book! Go me. I've wanted this book for a while, and F gave it to me for my birthday. I think Hayes is the kind of poet who's better when you see him read than he is on the page. For one thing, the man is fine as hell. More importantly, the poems are very musical, very lyrical, with a lot of rhythm and jazz. I think I put this book on my list after I saw Hayes read at AWP a few years ago. The poems are definitely solid, for sure, but I would say they're likely to be better out loud.

Favorites: "At Pegasus", "Pittsburgh", "Buy One, Get One" had some good lines in it, "Goliath Poem" had some good stuff.

I remember liking "Pittsburgh" too, but I thought I might be biased. Glad to you hear you dug it as well.

It had a really neat metaphor and it knew it. Very cool poem.

Incidentally, your receipt fell out of the book. I see that you bought it used back in 2002. Way to recycle a gift from your own collection! :)
