I read this for the first time just over a year ago, and reread it this weekend because I wanted something light and fun. I still really love the book, but the characters seem a little more formulaic to me now, and I absolutely did NOT remember the N-word appearing in the last line of the book and the resulting racist remark. For the time period when this was written, that bit of dialogue is fine and humorous local color, a cute little story to end with, but to a modern ear it is horribly jarring, and it really threw me off and colored my whole feeling about the book. I never even thought of Montgomery in a racist light before and never wanted to. Overall, I still love the book, but ugh. And Brian's poor kitten still makes me cry.
