so i'm doing the friday five this week, even though it's not friday and i've never done it before, because i wanted to think about when i was reading books as a little kid.
1. What were your favorite childhood stories?
my all-time favorite book ever--The Hero & the Crown by Robin McKinley. i don't even remember getting it, it's just always been there. i also loved Harold & the Purple Crayon, and my mom and i used to read over and over this book about "two little kittens named Jill and Marie. They're just as nice as kittens can be... We'll keep them warm and feed them well; if they spill some milk, I'll never tell." funny how i can recite most of the book from memory and can't recall the title. i also have good memories of reading Redwall with my mom at night before bed--we had to renew it from the library like eight times, but we read the whole thing together. oh, and Half Magic, that was a good one. it's hard for me to remember the picture books that i liked because after i was 6 or so i was reading mostly stuff without pictures. i do remember The Woodland Folk in Fairyland, though--i had a few of the woodland folk books and they were cool. i also liked the Berenstein Bears, but i only ever got to read them at the doctor's office.
2. What books from your childhood would you like to share with your children?
definitely everything age-appropriate by Robin McKinley--her fairy tales are lovely. and of course, harold and the purple crayon. there's just nothing better.
3. Have you re-read any of those childhood stories and been surprised by anything?
i remember once when i hadn't read The Hero & the Crown for a while, i reread it and realized there was a sex scene in there towards the end. i completely missed it when i was younger. it was all subtle, that one character mentions that he won't be getting any sleep tonight, but still, i was the kind of kid who looked for that sort of thing.
4. How old were you when you first learned to read?
um, three?
5. Do you remember the first 'grown-up' book you read? How old were you?
i guess it could've been a few things. i know that i read The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks the year i was in fifth grade (10 years old) because first of all it took me forever and secondly i've been reminded about how i used to lug that giant thing to school and read it on the playground at recess instead of playing (that was what first clued lauren's brother in to the fact that i was an odd kid, which he later told her when she and i got to be best friends). that's probably the official first grown-up book i ever read, but i can't remember for sure--i know i also read Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series when i was pretty young, and i also read Jean Auel's Clan of the Cave Bear, but that might be a little later (considering i remember knowing what was going on and being a little weirded out by certain scenes).
you know, i always mean to do the friday five every week. oh well. i thought this was a good one to do, though.
