supercheesegirl: (yoga - cute lotus sunburst)
Had class with Lucia last night. Good, but the wrist pain is now so problematic that it can't bear my weight at all--no downward dog even. I did dolphin instead for the whole practice, and we all know how I hate dolphin pose. Particularly dolphin plank. Which Lucia made me do extra of. So, yeah, the wrist really hurts. I bought a wrist brace and made a doctor's appointment for next week. The wrist brace helps, I think, in that I am less likely to injure myself further when wearing it, but it makes the pain more obvious when I'm not wearing it. So, wearing it while sleeping and typing, at least for now. We'll see if things improve in a few days.

::edit:: I just checked through the yoga posts, and the wrist has been bothering me since at least Sunday August 2. Which means that it was probably bothering me before that and that was just the first time it intruded into my yoga practice. It's been less than three weeks. Ugh.

I have a difficult time in certain poses with my right wrist. I know my wrist is stiffer and doesn't bend as far as it should since I had surgery. Sometimes it helps me to turn my wrist slightly to the side instead of facing the same way as my feet (if that makes sense) in downward facing dog. DFD is the worst pose for my wrist. And I can barely do DFD into plank. Oh and sometimes table pose is difficult.

Did you ever injure your wrist? I don't remember you writing about it if you did.

I have NO FREAKIN' CLUE what I did to my wrist! A few weeks ago it started hurting out of nowhere, but just when I bent it back and applied pressure--like with my hand flat against a door pushing it open, or like in plank pose holding up my weight. At first it didn't hurt in downward dog at all. I modified poses and tried doing gentle wrist exercises, but it's only gotten worse. I'm frustrated--I wish I knew what was causing it. It's hard to be full of yogic calm when something's hurting--nothing's supposed to hurt in yoga--or when I can't do a pose "properly" the way I'm used to doing it.

It could be a ganglion cyst. I have one of those in my wrist, too. It just came about all of the sudden- no injury I could pinpoint (besides having surgery on that wrist). Ganglion cysts are pretty common in women- especially in the wrist.

Basically your joint fluid builds up and can get trapped so you have a fluid "bubble" in your joint. It was painful when it first developed but the pain has improved. If it starts bothering me I'll wear my wrist brace and that usually helps. Increased joint motion can mean the "bubble" gets fuller and hurts more.

If it's a ganglion cyst, at least it's nothing serious. Or um... something. Yeah, it's frustrating but I guess I've learned to live with it.
