so this weekend, jorn and i went up to rochester, new york for amy & josh's wedding.
on friday, we got up early and rhett dropped us off at the airport around 8:30am. we sat around and waited for our 10:15 flight, which was right on time, and we didn't have any problems with that (other than the absolute coldness of the lowest level of hell happening in the airport, and rox without her sweatshirt). anyway, we arrive without incident at 11:15 at DC's reagan airport. we now have a four-hour layover till our flight to rochester at 3:05, so we find our gate and have a seat. now, gates 35A and 35B are in the same place at the reagan airport, and these are the gates through which all the puddle-jumping us airways express flights leave. the way it works is that they call one flight at a time to board, and the people go down some stairs and out the door and then a shuttle takes them to the actual plane. so we're waiting, and supposedly you board 30 minutes before the scheduled flight time, right? well, it gets later and later. and we realize that there are flights leaving from gates 35A and B at 2:50, 2:55, 2:59, three at 3:00, and then ours at 3:05. it took forever, and we didn't actually get called for our flight till way after it was supposed to have left, and we didn't actually take off till around 3:40. which isn't that bad, i know, but it was still annoying to be sitting there waiting for our flight and not knowing when it would be our turn.
we did have a nice surprise when we got to the rochester airport, though--sarah's steve had come to meet our flight! we had thought we were going to have to take a taxi to the rehearsal dinner. so that was awesome. and oddly enough, this was the first time jorn and steve had met, which really surprised me--i thought they had met before. anyway, he took us to the hotel (the hampton inn) so we could drop off our stuff first and change there for the dinner instead of in some airport bathroom. and at the rehearsal dinner, we saw sarah for the first time in a year--yay--and amy and josh for the first time since graduation! YAY! when i saw amy, i felt more like i last her two weeks ago instead of two years. it was so nice. i said hello to amy's parents and aunt gail, and met josh's parents for the first time, and amy & josh's friends from denver, who were really nice. after the dinner, we took a walk along lake ontario and then i went with sarah and our boys to the best western, where mel & felter and the denver people and missy and cassy & forrest and a bunch of other people were staying, and we hung out there and had some drinks until jorn and i decided we were wiped out after all our travelling and we needed to go to bed.
saturday: jorn and i woke up around 9:30 so we could hit the complimentary continental breakfast. then we laid around our room and watched tv with polywhirl until we had to start getting ready. sarah, as honorary bridesmaid, had left the hotel at like 8:30 so she could get her makeup done with the rest of the girls (she ended up as honorary bridesmaid i think in part because the best woman, amy's best friend laurie, had been pregnant and had her baby last week, so she had other things on her mind and couldn't perform some of her best womanly duties like planning the bachelorette party, etc, so sarah took over some of that). anyway, jorn and i got ready and steve drove us to the wedding. i did my little part as a communion assistant--i had to come forward and hold the wine chalice, and i felt all important--and then the wedding was over at 3:15 or so. amy looked so beautiful in her dress, sarah and i almost cried like four times. it was a very nice wedding, although very heavy on the lutheran stuff (which my wedding will not be). afterwards, the wedding party got to drive all over rochester taking pictures in various places, and since the reception didn't start till 6 and we hadn't had lunch, steve and jorn and i went to pizza hut. we got shafted, though--they were doing that deal where they gave away a free dvd if you got a large pizza, but we didn't get ours because "it was the last day of the promotion" and they "ran out". teh at you, pizza hut. oh, and our server there was named kathy, she had like four teeth and a nametag that said, below her name, "25 LONG years." poor kathy. then we went back to the hotel and watched some more sci fi channel--the 13th warrior, with antonio banderas. i had seen part of it before, and this happened to be the same part, but that's okay.
on to the reception. jorn and i forgot to grab the gift, so steve had to drive jorn right back to our hotel to get it. sigh. the dinner was really good, although i definitely could've eaten more if i hadn't been full of pizza. :) the dj sucked--after dinner was over, everybody just sort of sat around awhile because he wasn't playing anything, i guess to give the servers time to clear the tables? it would've been the perfect time to do those first-dance-as-a-married-couple, amy's dance with her dad, josh's dance with his mom things, especially since the head table ate first and thus finished first also, but no, he waited. then when he started playing music for everyone to dance to, he played crap. amy had made a long request list that sarah and missy had helped her with, and she had specifically asked him not to play any country music, but he hardly played anything from her list but did play a shania twain song, that cotton eyed joe song, and one other country song. when asked if he could please play something from the list he was given, he replied that he was getting to it and he was just "mixing it up a little." what a jerk--it's not your wedding, you have no right to play stuff the bride doesn't want to hear. when he did play stuff from the list, it seemed like he deliberately picked the slower songs, like dar williams or the indigo girls, and played them right after his dancier unrequested crap, so that when no one really danced to the requested songs, he could be like, see? amy was going to keep him till 11pm, but she told him to go at 10. it always seems like the djs suck at weddings, why is that?
another feature of the reception was that i discovered ameretto and ginger ale. there was a limited amount of stuff covered at the bar that was free, and none of it was my usual drinks (not even kahlua!), so i was a little upset because i had spent all my cash on pizza earlier. steve bought me a malibu rum and coke (regular rum was free, malibu rum was not, and i like the coconut). but then sarah came over with ameretto and ginger ale. yeah. i had like three or four. after the reception we admired amy & josh's decorated car (covered with balloons, "just married" on all the windows, and with the entire car full of balloons). the bad thing about the decorated car was that before the very tired amy and josh could actually leave the reception, they had to pop a few dozen balloons. and sarah, being the environmentalist, had to clean up the popped balloon pieces. then we headed back to our hotel to get changed into more comfortable stuff, and then back over to the best western, where we got to hang with amy and josh and a bunch of people for a while. jorn and i ended up getting to bed at around 2; sarah and steve went back to the party after they dropped us off.
sunday: jorn and i dragged ourselves out of bed, got showered, made it downstairs in time for breakfast. we checked out, and then waited for sarah and steve to come down because we were all going to meet amy & josh at the best western lobby at 10:15 to go to a street festival. we were, of course, late. :) but amy & josh waited for us, and we all went to the festival, and it was really fun! and a lot bigger than it seemed like it would be--amy said she heard it was over a mile long. we didn't even walk the whole street before it got late and we had to turn around. but we did some shopping, ate some food, watched some people (there were quite a few cute girls there). jorn got all sucked into the cd store's booth, of course, but i looked with him and actually found a cd i wanted--arrested development. i'm listening to it now and it's pretty okay. we got a total of five cds for $13.00. yeah. jorn got cheesecake on a stick from one of the vendors, and it was supergood--they take the frozen cheesecake (jorn got a berry cheesecake) and dipped it in boiling white chocolate. the cheesecake cooled the chocolate and the chocolate unfroze the cheesecake, and it was seriously ymmuy, even though i don't like cheesecake. i only had one bite, though. and one of the booths had puppets, and i got all excited, but i didn't have any cash because i had spent it all on pizza the night before, so i turned and sadly walked away. but sarah bought me the puppet anyway. she's so good to me. he's a little alien and he's really cute (i put him in the vase chelsea gave me, and he looks cute there too). :) the only problem with the street festival was that we ended up spending so much time there we didn't have time to go play mini golf, and jorn was all disappointed. but we are going to play some serious mini golf with sarah and steve when we move up north again. so sarah and steve dropped us off at the airport, and we sat around a while, but we knew that would happen. the flight from rochester to dc was uneventful, and when we landed, guess where we were? you got it--gate 35A! and guess where our next flight was leaving from? gate 35A! so we sat and waited at gate 35A again, and this time our plane didn't even show up for a while--it was delayed by about an hour. thankfully we were able to call rhett and let her know. she and keri picked us up when our plane finally got to greensboro, around 10pm. we were so freaking tired, i went to bed pretty much right away when we got home. it was a good weekend--hopefully i'll be able to scan in some pictures for y'all. i know i got at least one great shot of mel with beer coming out her nose. :)
