Yoga # 7 for 2010
Wednesday January 27, early morning
30 minutes
185 minutes total
I had a really nice yoga practice this morning. Flowed through the standing work quickly (about 12 minutes) did weights and squats, then did tree pose, since I haven't been doing much balance work lately. I was considering trying headstand, but I haven't done much with inversions for a long time; also, I was reading in Yoga Journal that restorative poses like legs-up-the-wall can help with Seasonal Affective Disorder. I haven't been diagnosed or anything, but I've really been feeling the exhaustion and depression that seem to go along with SAD, so instead of doing headstand, I relaxed in legs-up-the-wall for a full five minutes. It was nice.
With only 20-30 minutes for yoga in the mornings, I obviously don't have a ton of time to be adding new elements to my practice--I skimp on the basic stuff--but I think I do want to add in some restorative work in the hopes that it'll help me through the winter (and the wedding). Maybe morning can be my vigorous practice and I could work in 20 minutes before bed a few nights a week. I've been having trouble sleeping lately--my brain going too fast and can't relax--so yoga to wind down before bed might be a good thing. I feel like my evenings are already so packed with THINGS I NEED TO GET DONE that I go to bed too late to begin with, but that could well be part of the problem. Maybe to take care of myself I need to cut back on the GETTING THINGS DONE and relax a little bit about that stuff, and do some yoga at night and get to bed earlier. We'll see if I can give that a try.
