I'd like to get some speakers or something for my iPod, since it'll be my one source of music this summer. Anyone have recommendations?

If you're looking for something into which you can dock your iPod, I suggest you take it to an Apple retail store (Cambridgeside, e.g.) and try out the dozen or so docking speaker systems they have on display so you can hear what kind of sound each of them puts out. (You can always decide on a model and then try to find it cheaper/tax-free somewhere else.)

I wound up going with the Logitech mm50, which seemed to have the best bass response for the type of music I was trying, yet was surprisingly among the cheapest of the offerings. It's small, has a built-in rechargeable battery so you can use it without plugging it in, can charge your iPod and also function as a dock for synchronization with iTunes, and comes with a carrying case and remote control. Highly recommended if you like its sound.

I don't think you're talking about travel speakers, but the ones I use I got from Raido Shack for 1500ยข. I like those a lot, but it's also because I can take them with me when I know I'm not going to be in Boston. If you want compactness, that might be the way to go, otherwise getting the dock speakers would probably be best.

We have The Creature (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/2.RSLID?mco=D0C1CD7C&nplm=T9077LL%2FA), and we like it okay. It's not like BIG SOUND or anything, but it does what we want when we need some music around the place.

And it looks damned cool!

I'm not really picky about sound--mostly I just want something that, if I put it on the counter, I'll be able to hear it while I do the dishes. You know, basic "it makes good noise" sound. And inexpensive. I may hit the Apple store to try some things out.
