supercheesegirl: (me - work trauma brain)
Dear friends, my computer is dying. I bought this computer back in 2004 or 2005, so it's had a good long life as computer lives go. I ran a backup just a few weeks ago so I'm not stressing too much about file recovery, thankfully. I was hoping to get another year or two out of this machine, but that seems impossible based on current conditions. The computer started by spontaneously rebooting itself, first on occasion and then more and more frequently; now it refuses to boot Windows at all, restarting itself midway through its boot sequence. Sometimes it bluescreens and beeps rhythmically; sometimes it bluescreens and screams until I turn it off manually. Under the circumstances, it would likely be more effort than it's worth to have someone repair it when I could just put that money toward a new machine.

The issue now is that I need a new computer, and with this whole "about to give birth any time now" thing, I don't really have the time or inclination to do the necessary research. So I'm asking for advice. Here are the uses to which my computer is typically put:

- using Word, Excel, etc (and I'm looking forward to having a current version of MS Office)
- playing music and loading music onto my almost-as-ancient iPod classic
- storing large files (my ancient iPod is a 60 GB, and it's over half full, so that's a lot of music, plus photos)
- using the internets
- casual photo processing and touch-ups (I have Photoshop but never use it; more lightweight programs are fine)

At this technological moment in time, I'm guessing it would be silly to buy another desktop machine. Things are getting tinier and more portable. I would be open to having a laptop, but said laptop would need to be particularly tiny and portable (unlike the large and ungainly laptops loaned by my work IT department, which almost caused me a work-related injury when I had to lug one all over Boston last year). If I'm getting a laptop, I want to be able to stick this thing in my purse. However, I would also want to be able to use it like a desktop machine and dock it somehow to my current monitor, mouse, and keyboard for my home computing needs.

F and I had been thinking of getting a Kindle or iPad, so that I'd have something handy to use for reading one-handed while holding the baby, or for looking up recipes efficiently while in the kitchen without having to run upstairs and print them out. But I don't think I could deal with something like that as my primary machine, especially not when I have so many other life changes going on to adjust to. Baby steps here. For the same reason, I don't want to consider a Mac at this point.

Also, and hopefully this goes without saying, cost is a major factor. We got diapers to buy.

So: suggestions? Ideas? Things I should consider?

(cross-posting this to the FBs too, feel free to respond in whichever realm you're happiest.)

ipod case

This weekend I removed my ipod from its case for the first time in probably five years. I bought the ipod in 2006, got a cheap case which almost immediately scratched the screen, invested in a $30 rubbery ipod jacket instead, and it's pretty much lived in there ever since, until this weekend, when I was out of town with friends and we needed music for cards and drinking and my ipod wouldn't fit in the docking station with its case on. Poor thing was positively greasy in there. I guess it just goes to show that even ipods need a bath sometimes. I wiped the ipod down really well, and now I am planning to wash the case with actual dish soap. Meanwhile, my ipod is lying naked in my lap. It looks kind of anonymous and small.

So last night I re-installed iTunes. Then I uninstalled it, then re-installed it again, uninstalled it, re-installed it, uninstalled it, and re-installed it. The winning version: 9.0! Apparently the latest versions of iTunes include some sort of files that stay on your computer even after you uninstall it to prevent you from reinstalling a much earlier version (two of those re-installs were 6.2 and 7.0, and the installation seemed to go fine until I tried to start up the program and got an error message saying that iTunes was missing some files and needed to be re-installed--and no amount of clicking "repair" would correct it--hence the installation party). Silly me, here I thought that when the system asked me "Would you like to completely remove iTunes from your computer?" and I clicked "Yes", that it would then completely remove the program and leave no files behind. But the 9.0 install went fine, and I was able to plug in an old version of my iTunes library so I didn't even lose my playlists, and then (the true test) I plugged in my ipod and they connected beautifully! My ipod now contains new music from The National and Dawes, and one edited yoga playlist and two new ones. And that's pretty much all I've been trying to do for the past two weeks, so, score. Thumbs up to oldapps.com, which wins the Rox Prize for Most Useful Website Ever.

Yoga # 71
Wednesday August 4, early morning
25 minutes
2085 minutes total

Started with weights and four sun salutations, then did balance poses, strength-building poses, and inversions. I hadn't done my headstand in ages and it felt really good. I also tried the walk-up-the-wall handstand prep, which I am really bad at. I need to practice doing that more than once a month if I ever want to be strong enough for a handstand. Overall a really nice and uplifting practice.

Last night I uninstalled iTunes. I actually uninstalled everything Apple-related on my computer (and then uninstalled some other stuff too just because I was on a roll--why were there three versions of Java on my computer, anyway?). I'm sure it will turn out to be a huge hassle when I reinstall, but last night it felt incredibly liberating. Empty recycle bin! And one step closer to finally having some new yoga playlists.

Yoga # 70

Really great yoga practice this morning. Started with free weights and four sun salutations, then did standing work. I was working especially to try to follow B.K.S. Iyengar's suggestions and to seek balance, challenge, and focus in each pose. The meditation afterwards also went well today--I did pretty well at following Iyengar's and Thich Nhat Hanh's guidelines for calming the mind. So, hooray for reading about peace and meditation and yoga every single day, I guess.

In other news, I'm a packrat and I keep everything, and today I discovered that I still have the CD that came with my ipod way back when I first bought it in 2006. I'm going to uninstall iTunes and reinstall it directly from the CD. It worked back then! With such an old version, I'm sure I won't be able to access the iTunes store, but I can buy mp3s from amazon for cheaper anyway. I'd rather have a functioning old version that will talk to my damn ipod than a shiny new fancy version that freezes up when I try to introduce them.

I had a great birthday evening. F and I had a fabulous dinner out in Media, and Wanda Sykes was at the next table.

I bought a new suit that looks fabulous on me. Apparently I am a size 6 on top and a size 10 or so on the bottom. That means that I can't shop for suits at Macy's. Stupid Macy's. Mad points to Express, of all places, and a secondary shout-out to the Gap, which also sold pants and jackets separately and which had a jacket I loved and pants that almost were great--it was just that the suit at Express was entirely awesome and had a skirt instead of pants. (Although I suppose they had pants too--I just tried the skirt--but anyway Express wins for having the most options and best outfit available.) I also bought a black blazer--it's not the awesomest one ever but it was on sale for 30 bucks and will be a good thing to have.

Turns out my recurring sore throat issue can be pretty much solved by Benadryl. Even CVS-brand Benadryl. I've been feeling so much better since I started taking it. I suspect that taking Benadryl daily might not be the best thing ever for my health, but at least I'm not feeling crappy like I was all last week.

The Super Awesome thing going on right now is that I was prompted to download the latest version of iTunes and did so, and now iTunes won't communicate with my ipod. When I plug the ipod in, it starts to connect but then iTunes just freezes up and I have to ctrl-alt-del to end the program. Apparently, from what I'm seeing on Apple's tech discussion boards, this problem has been going on with this version of iTunes for a good two months and Apple Support isn't dealing with the problem at all or even acknowledging that there is a problem. Meanwhile I just bought two albums of mp3s on amazon and I can't put them on my ipod to listen to, nor can I do anything to change my playlists or add new playlists. One guy on the boards recommended returning to an archived iTunes library file, which I tried and it didn't work. My next plan is to uninstall iTunes completely and then reinstall an earlier version, but I expect this to be a real pain and so I haven't started on it yet. Argh.

My name is officially changed on my social security card and my driver's license. Working on the credit cards now--I'm supposed to start getting new cards in the mail any time now.

I had sort of planned to go running this morning, but when the alarm went off I really didn't want to. I just snoozed it and coerced F into snuggling with me for an extra 20 minutes. I haven't snoozed the alarm like that in almost a year. Maybe I'll go running tomorrow or Friday instead.

The kitchen ceiling was repaired last Friday afternoon. Woot. Now a nice man named Bobby is refinishing the walls. He's scraped off the nasty stuff and I think he's plastering today and maybe painting tomorrow. He left us a nice note.

Look at me, trying to post more substantive content! I hope you're all excited.

I had a really fun yoga practice in Lucia's class Thursday after work. I did my headstand and almost kicked a hole in the wall. Lucia was surprised and proud of me but asked me not to, uh, kick a hole in the wall.

Today I did yoga for about an hour. I'm so surprised by how much stronger I feel already. I have done yoga four times this week, and I'm not tired or hurting at all--just stretchy and glowy, and strong. I did all my strength building stuff, and was able to do more reps of it. I also did my headstand again and was shocked at how easy it is now. I don't have to use that much force (ie, hole-in-wall kicking force) to get my legs up. I just have to use my core muscles and the legs just kind of drift up. It's lovely. A really good practice. I need to try to keep up with yoga 3-4 times a week, because it really does make a difference!

Earlier this week I surfed amazon's lists to find some good yoga music. I downloaded a bunch of things on SoulSeek, and today I fixed the file names and tags and put them into iTunes and onto my iPod. I also made handy yoga playlists out of the different albums, and some other albums that feel yogic (like Enigma, and Secret Chiefs 3). So now I can get to the yoga music quickly and easily through the playlists, instead of trying to remember some obscure hindi-inspired band name and having to scroll through my very long list to find it. Also I put the playlist time length in the name, so I can choose a playlist based on how long of a practice I want. Pretty awesome, no? I should be set on yoga music for a good month or so, I bet.

I also took a good long walk last night. I went to take out the trash around 10:30 and it just felt so nice outside that I decided to take a walk. I left around 11:00, dropped off some library books, and took a long walk around the neighborhood, got home around midnight. My pinkie toe hurts now, but it was a good walk.

I had lunch with Tariq today, and he mentioned watching Brokeback Mountain, and so the damn Brokeback theme has been stuck in my head all afternoon. I caught myself mournfully whistling it in the bathroom. Time to turn on my ipod. (And of course now I'm thinking about Brokeback To The Future, too, which is just silly.)

I've been whining for ages about how I have nothing to do, and now I actually have some work to do and I'm all dragging my feet about doing it because I'm so tired. Bleh.

I have my ipod on shuffle, and it just came up with "The Beautiful" by P.M. Dawn (off the Of The Heart, Of The Soul... album). And then it followed that with "Baby You're A Rich Man" by the Beatles (off of Magical Mystery Tour). I had no idea before that P.M. Dawn had borrowed that "How does it feel to be one of the beautiful people?" line from the Beatles! It's the same melody! MY IPOD IS SO SMART!

Now up on yousendit:

The Tiny Goat - by The Gothic Archies

Now I will never think about this song again. Except that I will because that goat is inside my heart now, gnawing, and now that I know about him he'll make me sad forever.

::edit:: I realized what this song reminded me of. It reminded me of the short story "Miss Brill" by Katherine Mansfield. I had forgotten the title, so I looked it up online, and found the full text here (you can also download her entire short story collection from gutenberg.org). It's only maybe four pages long, quite short, but it will break your heart into little tiny pieces. Just finding it again and skimming through it, now I want to cry myself to sleep. I think you should all go read this story so I won't be all alone in this. But be warned--Mink, De, the sensitive ones among you--you will never forget this story and it will haunt you forever. I read it six years ago and I still remembered the whole thing. My mom never even read it, only had it described to her by me when she demanded to know what I was upset about, and she still remembers it. Go and be miserable, all my friends!
supercheesegirl: (iClaudius)
The worst song ever just came up in my iPod's random play. It's called "The Tiny Goat", by the Gothic Archies. It's the worst thing I've ever heard. Now I want to cry, or beat Stephin Merritt with a frying pan. Remind me to upload this song to yousendit later tonight so that all of you can share in the misery. It's not a very long song, thank goodness.
supercheesegirl: (iClaudius)
The shuffle on my ipod is toying with me this morning. It came up with Jewel's "You Were Meant For Me", followed two songs later by The Cure's "Love Song". Way to dwell, ipodzorznor.

At least it played me two David Bowie songs. That helped.
supercheesegirl: (iClaudius)
I'd like to get some speakers or something for my iPod, since it'll be my one source of music this summer. Anyone have recommendations?
supercheesegirl: (y tu mama - beach)
Thanks for doing my Name My iPod poll. The current frontrunners are Eli (which actually I thought of because my dad's middle name is Elias), Howl, and ipodzorznorz (which Jorn just came up with the other night off the top of his head and which for some reason I really like). I'm leaning toward Howl or ipodzorznorz but I still can't make up my mind. In other ipod news, Carlos is my new best friend because he's offered me his old ipod wall charger that he doesn't use anymore, and that will save me $30. That's worth not just a great big hug, but major help organizing your apartment if you still want it, dude (I didn't forget!). We should plan now a time to get together after my London trip, ok? (And interestingly, I wouldn't be going on this London trip if Carlos hadn't found super-cheap fares on Virgin Atlantic like, last summer. Dude, I'm going to organize the hell of your apartment!) Also, Heather has offered me her UK power adapter, so I can take back the one I bought and save another $13. I have Teh Best Friends. :)

Last night I went with Jorn, Dann, and Heather to see the Dave Chappelle block party movie. Good music and all, but I was most impressed that Dave Chappelle is actually honest-to-God *that funny* when he's just walking around and stuff. I wouldn'tve cared about the movie at all except that periodically he popped up and cracked some jokes.

Jorn leaves for his trip to TX tomorrow. I'll kiss him goodbye tomorrow morning and then I won't see him again for almost two whole weeks--by the time he gets back from TX, I'll be in London already. Teh Sad. :(

Whoa, there's a guy on the roof of the building next door. He's gesticulating and talking into a little recorder. Fridays in March appear to be good days for seeing people outside my window (which, remember, is on the FIFTH FLOOR).

Anyway, my ipod. Oh, I'm so excited. Read more... )

So--here's what my ipod needs now: a funky case, a charger that plugs into the wall instead of my computer, and a name. The first two I'm going to have to get on my own, but you all can help me out with the name. I came up with a few ideas, which are in the poll below, but I don't think they're the best ideas ever. You all probably have much cleverer names to suggest. So suggest away!

[Poll #688365]

In other news, Costco's online photo center now has a new policy that you have to be a Costco member in order to order pictures from them. I think that blows. I've been using their photo center for several months now, and I liked it because I could upload my pictures and then my mom could order them and get prints too. So stupid. I don't want to pay for a Costco membership just so I can buy pictures, even if it does end up being cheaper than whatever else I would do. I have no idea where there's even a Costco store near me, so I doubt I would use it to buy food and stuff. I had a whole plan to use just my digital camera in England, not my 35mm camera at all, and now that's thrown into disarray. I'm so freakin' pissed off.
