The worst song ever just came up in my iPod's random play. It's called "The Tiny Goat", by the Gothic Archies. It's the worst thing I've ever heard. Now I want to cry, or beat Stephin Merritt with a frying pan. Remind me to upload this song to yousendit later tonight so that all of you can share in the misery. It's not a very long song, thank goodness.

Interesting - "Sugar is Sweeter" by CJ Bolland is the worst song I've ever heard. Mostly because of the vocals; the musical content isn't terribly good but it isn't the worst I've ever heard.

I'm curious about yours, though. I look forward to comparing the two! I'll happily email you "Sugar is Sweeter" if you're curious. I only own a copy of it for that reason.

This song isn't bad musically--in that sense it's probably quite good. No, it's bad because it breaks your heart and makes you cry. Poor tiny goat!

Did you ever read the short story "Miss Brill" by Katherine Mansfield? Same sort of thing. I just looked it up and found online, and I read a little bit and now I want to cry myself to sleep. It's here if you'd like the torture.

If it's so bad, then why is it on your iPod?

I have a 60 gig ipod. When I left my ex-boyfriend, I ripped a lot of mp3s from his startlingly huge music collection. For example, I knew I liked one Bjork album, so I took the opportunity to snag her entire catalog from him. Similarly, I know I like the Magnetic Fields, so I copied everything by all of Stephin Merritt's side projects.

I have 6,644 songs on my ipod. It's half full. I have never listened to probably half the music on there, but I like the effect: it's like Rox radio when the ipod is on shuffle, because songs can come up that I've never heard before but I'll probably like them. Except this song, which now that I'm over the initial shock I will probably not delete. It's not a bad song musically; it's a bad song because it's heartbreaking, as if someone cut out your heart and fed it to a cute fuzzy bunny while you watched with your dying breath.

That's what the Gothic Archies are all about. Taking that last bit of hope and squashing it utterly.

Dear God, Stephin Merritt, what have you done?
