supercheesegirl: (food - cheese!)
I just watched the She-Ra: Secret of the Sword movie. It's the movie that established the She-Ra/He-Man crossover and started She-Ra as its own show. And, oh wow. The cheesiness--I couldn't stop laughing. The She-Ra characters are really ridiculous. There's Beau, who carries... a bow (and has a little mustache!). The villain, Hordak, is a complete idiot, and so are the soldiers of the (what else?) Horde. Although Shadow Weaver, the evil sorceress, has eerily nice breasts. Several other female villains too, which is good, I suppose, She-Ra can't always be fighting the patriarchy. Back on the good side, there's a pink-haired character named Glimmer, whose mother, Queen Angella (an-GEL-ah), has big angel wings. There's so much pink just in general! And there was one moment, where Beau and He-Man are riding together on a horse through the (pink and purple) Whispering Woods, that was possibly The Gayest Thing I've Ever Seen. It trumped the time when Skeletor was humping Beast Man. Jorn, you have to rent this. Oh my GOD. And the song that plays during the credits! And don't even get me started on Madam the crazy old witch. Oh dearie my!

I am so incredibly pleased that I own this. I am even more pleased that there's a second disc full of the "best of" She-Ra episodes. Fun!

Isn't it creepy, though? I mean, she's swathed in that robe and she doesn't have a FACE, but the robe is certainly clingy!

hee hee hee! This is like a weird convergence-coincidence thingy. I just started utilitarianism in ethics class on Thursday, and I *always* start Bentham by reading that first sentence of the Principles of Morals and Legislation thusly: "Nature hath placed mankind under the guidance of two sovereign masters - HE-MAN and SHE-RA!" Then I explain that no, it's actually pain and pleasure.

I *love* your teaching style.

I certainly hope Mindy got to watch it with you!

I must admit, there is part of me that has contemplated getting the first season of She-Ra. But there is another part of me that would probably beat up that first part and call it names if I bought it.

Oh, it's girly. Girly and gay. No avoiding that. But you have to see at least the movie. The movie is half about He-Man, after all, so you could justify it. :)

And OF COURSE Mindy watched it with me! She thought it was awesome!

HA! I own the Season 1 DVDs (or at least, all that's been released yet). I think the movie is just the first few episodes combined into one movie... not sure.

Anyway, I watched it ALL THE TIME when I was a kid. Gay, sure, but great emphasis on female characters being normal. The DVDs include .pdfs of their notes and workbooks and they talk about how She-Ra should not be represented as Unusually Strong Female, that both women and men should have strengths and everyone should just accept that. They're also very into environmentalism.

It's really weird watching it as an adult. The puns are dreadful and c'mon, a pink and purple forest? But Shadow Weaver is awesome and so is She-Ra and I still love the show.

I definitely noticed the environmentalism. Everything evil looked mechanized and dark and nasty and factory-like, and everything good looked natural and happy and... pink and purple. :) I also like how Adora isn't a total clown like Adam is--she's cool and capable in her own right, not just as She-Ra.
