This cracked me right up this morning:

Go to google.com.

Click on Maps.

Click on Get Directions.

From: New York, New York.

To: Paris, France.

Then, read line #23.

(It also works if you do it backwards, Paris to NY, but then you get it in kilometers.)

OK, that's cute.
Are they being funny, or do you suppose that's just how any large body of water will come up?

I just plugged in Venice and that's a swim too.

Wait, wait...wasn't Google maps the one that if you searched for the Moon, and did the satellite option, and zoomed in really close, you'd see a cartoony cheese? Or was that another map thing?

They must have fun working there, either way. ;)

I don't know. Maybe try San Francisco, CA to Tokyo, Japan?

I find it amusing that they thought it was a shorter trip to drive all the way up to Quincy, MA before plunging into the Atlantic Ocean for the 3,462 mile swim.

Google Maps (and all the map services) work by having a big database with routes and start and end points. So, someone added the route from Boston to France via swimming, and so trans-Atlantic requests find it and use it. Even if you wanted to go from, say, Florida to Venice.
