yoga # 48

supercheesegirl: (yoga - cute lotus sunburst)
Got up at 6:35 this morning to do yoga. I didn't sleep well at all last night, so getting out of bed wasn't fun. Also, my wrist hurt a little. However, I got to do yoga in the new yoga room.

Three pictures of the new yoga room! )

Today has been an up-and-down day already. I was up late last night, so I decided to let myself sleep in a bit this morning--I didn't get up early to do yoga or jog, I just slept in. So that was nice, but then the lamp on the timer went off, as we've been trying to get it to do for the past two weeks, but it went off at the early time before I meant to get up, so that was less good. I was still in a good mood as I got ready for work, even though I knew it was raining out--I planned ahead and wore my rain boots. But as soon as I got outside, I discovered that my rain boots and flimsy umbrella and little sweater were not going to be adequate protection against the elements. There was a river of rain all the way down the sidewalk. It was raining sideways, and raining hard. And it turns out I need new rain boots. I may only wear the things a couple times a year, but you know, they should be waterproof when I wear them. So my feet got drenched, my pants got drenched, my shirt and sweater got wet, my purse and tote bag got all wet, and when I called F to let him know to wear boots and crappy pants and bring his work clothes to change into, my crappy umbrella turned inside out. And then the train was late, so I got to stand outside in the windy damp cold for an extra 10-15 minutes.

Here's a picture of the rain fountaining off the roof of the train station: picture )

When the train finally did come, I was so uncomfortable and grumpy that I didn't even want to get a book out of my wet bag. I just sat there grumpily. But then my morning started to turn around. I remembered that I had a Starbucks giftcard in my tote bag, and it still had $5 on it. When I got downtown I went to Starbucks and got a grande chai nonfat latte! And the barrista girl spilled some guy's coffee, but it wasn't mine! And whatever wrath of [fill-in-deity] storm was hitting Swarthmore, it wasn't hitting downtown, so I didn't get any wetter, just more windblown.

And then, when I got upstairs, I found a message in my inbox from Jenn Link. Jenn Link is an awesome DC-based wedding photographer, and she is hosting a "Geek Love" free wedding photography contest. The deadline was yesterday, and F and I had been working on our contest entry essay for the past two weeks and had just submitted it, and Jenn wrote back right away and said she loved our story! So that made me really excited.

And while my pants are still all wet, which isn't particularly comfortable, at least I had a bunch of sweaters at the office and could change my sweater. I'm now wearing my ivory "hangover sweater" sweater, which is fuzzy and comforting. Oh, and I made a donation to the MS Society, and I'm going to send the matching gift form today, too, and the matching gift form always makes me happy. So today is looking up!

::edit:: And I forgot to mention that now I have a renewed resolve to find the yellow rain slicker I've been dreaming of, along with rain boots to match it, and a shiny new umbrella. I really really need the new umbrella. I've never spent more than $10 on an umbrella before, but I think it's time. Perhaps a big rainbow one!

::edit #2:: My most wonderful fiance just sent me links to an assortment of yellow rain slickers on ebay. I am considering this one, because I really want a hood.

I'm also considering the Lands' End sun shower raincoat (which is so stylish, but it doesn't have a hood), or the sun shower rain parka (which does have a hood but looks less stylish to me). Also, it looks as though the matching Lands' End wellie boots are on sale. I will consider other suggestions.

The Proposal:

F's flight arrived in Philly around 4:30 PM on Tuesday 12/23. I met him at the airport, brought him home on the train, and we spent the evening relaxing. At one point, F claims that he needs to go out to my car--he says he hid something there the last time he was in town, which at first I completely don't believe, but he explains that he saw this perfect gift last time he was here and thought I'd find it for sure if he hid it in the house, so he found a secret spot in my car. I am gullible. He goes out to the car, where he secretly calls my parents and asks for their blessing. My mom is totally awesome, and doesn't let on a thing when I talk to her maybe an hour later. Instead, she tells me about how my dad spent like two hours at Home Depot buying this thing for the lawn that he's now assembling. Go Mom.

On Wednesday 12/24, I took the day off, we slept in a little bit, and then did fun holiday things. F had a lot of gifts to wrap, and I went to the grocery store and then baked yet another batch of cookies. In the early afternoon, F mentioned that he had one or two more gifts to pick up in my neighborhood (full of cute little stores and bakeries, FYI) and went for a walk. When he got back, I was finishing up the cookies. F took over in the kitchen for a bit and I tidied up the living room and put away the wrapping things; we had the holiday music on, and F popped into the room for a minute, said "This one broke!" and gave me half a cookie. I was so happy in that moment, just having F there and doing stupid domestic holiday things, that I burst into tears right there in the living room. F was very sweet about it.

A little while later, F told me that there was a poem he really wanted to read to me on Christmas Day, but he needed to check the book out of the library, which he couldn't do without me and my library card, so could we walk up to the library? I thought, You couldn't check out the book from your library before you left California?! But the cookies were done, and we had time before my parents were coming over for dinner, so I said sure. It's only maybe a ten-minute walk to the library in my neighborhood. We get to the library, and F says he doesn't want me to see the book he's getting, so I need to look at something else for a minute. Okay. He comes to get me, holding one hand behind his back, and says there's another book he wants me to look at. I turn to the shelf and I see...Read more... )

Sunday's Race for the Cure was really great. I'm so glad I signed up and got up early to go do this.

full story and photos behind the cut )

Here's a link to a story in the Philadelphia Inquirer about the Race.

Overall, the Race was a really amazing thing to do. I'd never done a race like this before. The energy was just incredible, all these people, all these women out to fight back against breast cancer. It was super cool and I'm so glad I did it!
supercheesegirl: (wordy - scrabble eeeeee)
I rocked at today's Scrabble game, but I also pulled the J, Q, and Z, which helped a lot.

My words:
27 points - JEER
14 points - MEAL
10 points - JAR
12 points - SITS/EBBS
53 points - Q(U)AD/DA/AD
14 points - RAIN/ER
26 points - GA(U)ZE
-6 to Jean, who went out first
150 total

Jean and Christine tied for second place with 107 points, and Kari brought up the rear with 95.

I was going to include a picture of myself in my Scrabble crown, but I can't get my darn phone to email it to me. I've done this many times before and the message always goes through. I don't know what the problem is. What the problem is??!?

There's been a request for a picture of Dawn's Horrible Outfit on the BtVS calendar. I'll put it behind an lj-cut so you don't have to see it if you don't want to.

Yuck! )

Last night I did the volunteer thing at the historic library. I shelved books for an hour and a half. At least I'm getting better at it. Then I was supposed to start on a file-alphabetizing project that would have been fun, but it was the kind of project that once you start, you really need to finish in one sitting, and it was big enough that we didn't think I could finish in half an hour. Although I probably could have, I'm a super alphabetizer. So instead, I just checked to make sure the files were clearly labeled for future alphabetizing. So it was a really monotonous evening! And then after I left I was really hungry and needed dinner, but no place downtown is open for fast cheap food after 8pm. I could have had a nice sit down meal, but I wanted a freakin' sandwich. I ended up getting chicken nuggets and fries from Crown Fried Chicken, which was greasy, and I had to wait a really long time. Meh! But I had a good long chat with F on the way home on the train, and then I did dishes and got to bed at 10:45 instead of midnight, and I woke up with the radio this morning and actually got out of bed at 6:30 so I made the 8:11 train and didn't have to listen to Johnny Longbow Conductor go on and on and on and on and on. It was a peaceful quiet train ride. And today is Scrabble day.

I haven't seen last night's LOST yet, but I'm hopefully going to watch it tonight. With ice cream.

Pictures of my apartment and of my trip to AWP are now posted on snapfish. If you want to see and didn't get an email invitation, comment with your email address and I'll send you the link. Comments screened.

In other news--I really love my new neighborhood. Even when it's covered with snow.

::edit:: Some new pictures added to the snapfish gallery. New red bed curtains hung on the bed, and the computer desk area now has actual decor instead of just wall. My peacock tapestry fits *perfectly* in that nook, I'm amazed. I think my apartment is now really, honestly Done. (Except for a cd rack.)
supercheesegirl: (me - sassy lashes)
It's so weird to be doing girly stuff like putting my hair in hot rollers and putting on panty hose. I was a little concerned about the hair being too big and poofy--I was going to try putting it up somehow, but it seems to have settled down a bit. Well, you can judge for yourselves. Should I try to put it up? You must call me on my phone in the next hour to let me know!

This may be my new favorite picture of myself.

I went to a Halloween party on Saturday night with Rose and Lauren. I didn't know anyone there, and I didn't make any new friends because I'm bad at people and I suck at life, but at least I looked pretty.

The awesome new addition to the usual fairy costume: eyelashes.

Last night Jorn and I went to the Belle & Sebastian show at the Avalon. Overall it was a really good show. Opening band was the New Pornographers, whom I had never heard before, but they were pretty good and cute and stuff. They were already playing when we arrived shortly after 8pm, so we didn't get to see their full set. One lyric I actually heard and remembered was "I sang my madrigal--and it was magical." Any band that has the word "madrigal" in the lyrics is generally okay by me, so I'm going to see about downloading some tracks. Didn't take any pictures because we were pretty far back and there were a lot of tall people standing in front of us. Also standing in front of us was a chick dancing all around, which was annoying because the club was seriously packed, we were shoulder-to-shoulder and she's all thrashing about? Settle down, honey, bop in place like everybody else. Also annoying was the fact that part of her dance routine was pulling her hair up in a ponytail, then pulling it out, shaking the hair out, and pulling it back up again. So her arms were all over, and people were having to dodge, and then when she did get the hair pulled back the girl in front of me near got smacked in the face with the madly swinging ponytail. Have some consideration, chica. She reminded me of Kari in a big way, though, so I didn't mind her antics too much.

Belle & Sebastian came on around 9:45. By this point Jorn and I had worked our way forward in the crowd, and we were standing to the right of the stage, same basic place we stood for the Calexico/Iron & Wine show, next to the (low flat thing you can sit on). There were already people sitting on it, unfortunately. I of course immediately noticed that if one of the girls sitting down would move her coat to be in the center of the bench rather than on the edge, then there would be room for another person to sit. Also the four people sitting next to us were taking up space that could have sat five or six people. These observations continued to bother me for the duration of the show, because I'm a bitch like that and I wanted to sit down but I'd rather get all pissy than just ask someone I don't know to scoot over.

Anyway! The band! They were really cute! With their little British accents and stuff, and the singer frolicking about all gay and adorable. (Mindy would have liked the show.) They played mostly songs from the new album, I think, which I haven't heard too many times, but most of the songs sounded at least familiar. Also they played some tracks off of If You're Feeling Sinister, which was an album I listened to obsessively back when I lived in Greensboro, so I knew all the words. They sounded good and got involved with the crowd, taking requests, asking us what we were thinking about (mashed potatoes, apparently, and wondering if we can have the singer's shirt). At one point the singer yells, "Hey you fuckers on the balcony, wake the fuck up!" midsong. The people on the balcony all looked really startled, it was awesome.

Some pictures )

So yeah, they were really good. But since I'm a total weakling old lady, I couldn't take standing there for the whole show. I did my yoga chair pose (sans arms) a few times, which helped, I guess increasing circulation in my legs, but after a while I just wanted to sit down. I felt claustrophic and I really couldn't adjust my position effectively to make it better: Jorn was standing in front of me, there was a chick right at my left shoulder, and to my right was the bench thing and some guy's legs, and people behind me too. If I moved one way I'd step on the guy's foot and if the other way I'd shove that chick, so I was sort of standing sideways for a while, which sucked because every time I shifted my weight I'd bump one of them. Also my dinner wasn't sitting spectacularly well and I was hella thirsty, and all that combined made me feel sick, so a few songs from the end I left my spot and went to the back. I discovered that are couches in the ladies room, which is good to know, but the problem with this club is that there's nowhere to sit and get some air where you can still hear the band--the ladies room isn't too bad but then someone uses the hand drier, which is apparently run by a large, loud nuclear generator that drowns out any other sounds. People can't even talk in the ladies room when hands are being dried. I tried sitting on the floor in the entryway for a bit, but the security guy got all up in my business so I had to stand up, and then my cell phone died so I couldn't text Jorn and find out when he wanted to leave, which meant I couldn't go sit in the ladies room because I had to make sure I spotted him when he did leave. Which was after the second song in the encore, of course. And I was fine with staying for the whole show, because they were really good, but the situation just frustrated me. We all know how well I deal with being uncomfortable and helpless (ever played the game The Sims? I felt like my comfort meter was all the way in the red).

All hipsters look alike after a while.

They played "Judy and the Dream of Horses", which is my very favorite B&S song.

It's not February anymore!!! Hooray!!!

I drove back from Connecticut to catch the Fluttr Effect show at the Middle East on Saturday night, and honestly, it was worth it. Read more... )

Overall, I really enjoyed the show, and I'd go see them again (only I'd stand in the back this time to hear them better).

Yes, folks, here's the part you've all been waiting for: my mother's lawn.

Warning: extreme brightness behind this cut tag. )

I love my mother.

I just realized, we didn't get any pictures with my camera of Jorn's family. Like, at all. I'm really sad about that.

The other thing I'm sad about is that I was experimenting with my camera in a lot of these, and I was noticing that taking pictures with the flash on was making people look all washed out. So I was turning the flash off and not realizing that it made most of my pictures really blurry. I'll know better for next time, I guess.
